Kanonkop Estate


The day we visited the beautiful Kanonkop Estate was not for wine tasting, but for a Christian camp for disadvantaged youth. We were guest speakers for the afternoon and evening sessions.

The road to the campsite is on the Kanonkop property. The estate's name literally means "canon head" and refers to the canon that used to sit on the hillock on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch Region of the Cape. During the 17th Century, the canon was fired every time a ship was spotted sailing into Table Bay. Farmers would load up their wagons and make the trip to the bay to trade and sell their goods. You can see the hillock clearly, to the left of the mountain peaks, in the photo below.
