Excelsior Wine Estate

Amanda recently played two netball games in Robertson. She's only in grade 2, so the matches are short and friendly and the coaches switch the positions the kids are playing when it's time to change sides on the court. We had almost a 3 hour gap between Amanda's first and second game, so we went wine tasting. We only managed to visit 2 wine estates, but it was worth it. We hadn't been to them before and we were quite impressed with what we saw. I have an earlier series of fabulous places to visit on the Robertson Wine Route with those links below this post.

The Robertson Wine Route winds its way through 5 towns (Ashton, Montagu, Bonnievale, McGregor, and Robertson) and includes over 50 award-winning wineries, outdoor activities, and more! One of our stops was at the Excelsior Estate. The setting was stunning. We tasted a few of their wines and our favorite that day was the Viognier.

Spice Route, South Africa

We live in the Western Cape of South Africa where there are plenty of neat things to see and do. If you are ever visiting Cape Town, then you should take a drive to the Spice Route in Paarl. It offers a bit of everything with an emphasis on handcrafted items from artisanal chocolates to craft beer. We recently took our son, Jeremiah, and his little sister, Amanda. It was a wintry day, so we didn't have the same views that we had previously. The views are stunning, so please take a moment to check out my earlier post: The Spice Route.

We went chocolate tasting and saw the chocolate maker at work behind glass who's name, De Villiers, is on the packaging. Amanda, who's only 8, actually likes dark chocolate, so the tasting was not wasted on her.

Nuy on the Hill

A couple of weeks ago we took Robbie's mom out for lunch at Nuy on the Hill. It was an early birthday treat and it was her first time there. Nuy on the Hill is Nuy's new wine tasting room with a gorgeous view and restaurant too. We had all four kids with us. It was our son's last day before heading back to university. We ordered a variety of wood-fired pizzas and some starters, so we could all taste a little of everything until we were full. There were also decadent milkshakes on the menu and the girls and I couldn't resist! My father-in-law couldn't be with us, so we have a good reason to go again.

The Hex River Valley - Part 3

I'm including this last set of photos in my series only because I took them on our drive home, between the Hex River Valley and Worcester. We stopped at another farm stall and had a peek at a nursery next door that is relatively new. South Africa has great farm stalls and they are often situated on routes that don't offer much else. When you're out in the middle of nowhere, then these little shops are a welcome sight. I shared photos of our favorite farm stall in Part 2, so be sure to check it out! Oh, and the nursery had an interesting selection of small cacti for sale.
